Three deputies injured in a shootout earlier this week said good training, teamwork and foresight from the police dog at the scene helped them stay alive.

El Dorado County sheriff's deputies Jon Yaws, Greg Murphy and Melissa Meekma were all injured during a gun battle with Mies. Yaws, whose police dog Donder was also hurt by gunfire, was reunited with his K-9 partner on Thursday.

"He drew fire and diverted the suspect's attention so he would quit shooting us ... this is my third dog, and they've all done heroic things to save me," said Yaws.

Yaws suffered multiple injuries on his arm, chest, hip and leg. Meekma was injured by a bullet that went through her right arm and exited through her shoulder blade, resulting in a broken scapula. Murphy was shot in the leg. Donder was injured in his leg and hip.

Yaws said he originally heard that Donder was dead, but a close family member and his partner informed him later in the day that he was OK.

"We don't like to lose any of our family members, four-legged or two-legged," said Yaws.

Meekma said the deputies are grateful and thankful for community support, as it has helped them get through recovery.

Edward Mies, who is accused of killing his 72-year-old father, died after a gun battle with deputies on rural property just off South Shingle Springs road.

Deputies were called to the property shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday to the area after receiving a report of gunfire. A man later identified as Arthur Mies was found shot and lying in a driveway. Authorities said 35-year-old Edward Mies is suspected of the killing.

The young Mies is accused of then trying to lure responding deputies into a nearby thicket and engaging them in a gun battle. At least 100 rounds were exchanged.

A sheriff's deputy is believed to have fired the shot that killed Edward Mies, Sheriff Jeff Neves said.

The injured deputies were all wearing bulletproof vests. Donder was not wearing a vest at the time of the shooting. While a vest was available, Neves said there was no time to put the vest on the dog prior to the armed confrontation.
