BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- Greg Perry, a marketing teacher at Beachwood High School in Ohio, spearheaded an initiative to turn his classroom into a learning environment that is eco-friendly and fun, Cleveland television news station WEWS reported.About 20 students from Beachwood and Mayfield High Schools participated in the marketing class program and transformed the classroom, making it green from floor to ceiling.
Last year's class put on an environmental expo to help generate money and sponsorships, and plenty of business helped out. Twenty different businesses collaborated on the project -- providing appliances, designing products and donating services. Some of those products include an air purification system, Energy Star appliances, a countertop backsplash made up of 100 percent used consumer glass, and a counter made of aluminum scraps embedded in a non-toxic resin. For the lighting, the room features daylight-harvesting technology. Each bank of lights has sensors, and the ones closer to the windows draw less energy than the windows farther back in the classroom. The classroom is available to the public for conferences and meetings and is handicap-accessible.The students plan to continue the green movement and will hold another environmental expo April 16.
